Arrowtown. A Town Born of Gold
Arrowtown has a colourful past which has created a charming and historically vibrant township.
Maori were the first humans through this landscape, on seasonal trips to hunt native birds, and seek pounamu (greenstone). Then came William Rees and Nicholas von Tunzelmann, the first Europeans, who established farms in the area.
Then came the discovery of gold. Jack Tewa, a Maori shearer for William Rees found gold in the Arrow River in 1862 (an X marks the spot today). 1500 miners soon established themselves on the banks of the river in a settlement they called Fox’s.
As the gold finds ebbed away and the European miners left to seek their luck on other Otago goldfields, the local government invited Chinese miners to try their luck. The small village they created and the remains of their hard work can still be seen today.
